Review of The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) by Joseph M — 20 May 2009
There are some movies that you can tell are just classic. This is one of those movies. From the minute it kicks off, you can tell it's different than your average movie. And that's why I gave it four stars.
The action is of course great even for 90s effects. The acting is top notch thanks to Douglas and Kilmer mainly. The story is great as well, you really like Val's character by the end of the movie, and everything is convincing.
There's great development from everyone, great twists, and all in all, it's pretty top notch for a movie hadn't heard of until my friend said, "Watch this." My only complaint is Michael Douglas' character.
Sure, he played the role very well indeed; I just didn't like the role. I think his crazy backwoods African expert hunter character has been overused too much, but maybe it wasn't in the 90s. I don't know; I just wasn't as interested in him as I would have like him to be in the beginning.
However, the action is very intense, and there even a couple times when the movie really throws you off your guard. In conclusion, this is a great movie and a must see for drama/action lovers. And the best thing is, all of it is true.
*spoiler* But I still find it a little hard to believe he can outrun and outclimb a lion.
