Review of The Getaway (1972) by Andrew B — 27 Mar 2011
A little stale after almost 40 years but not so bad. If you like Steve McQueen, this is not a bad movie for him although Papillon to me is the best movie he ever made. In his day, McQueen was as cool a guy as there was and this movie was pretty huge for him.
As far as a Peckinpah film, you'd hardly notice except for some of his regulars like Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens along the way. The "Ballet of Death" in the action sequences is nearly imperceptible in comparison to his masterpieces The Wild Bunch, Cross of Iron and Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.
It's really sort of mild, but not without a twisted edge. Al Lettieri plays one of the main heavies, and you'll remember him as Virgil 'The Turk' Sollozo from the Godfather. It was remade for no apparent reason by Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger and Michael Madsen in 1994 in an effort to make it more sleazy and bloody and disturbing I guess.
