Review of The Gay Divorcee (1934) by Louise B — 07 Feb 2009
Although a classic Astaire/Rogers film, I only found it so-so. This is probably because I've been more impressed by their later works. Astaire's solo work seemed very wild and lacked the smoothness that I've come to like about him.
But when he's with Ginger, wow. Those scenes were certainly memorable: Day and Night was classic Astaire/Rogers- elegant, classy, creative; the Continental (their small portion in it, at least) was the same; and even the short little reprise at the end pivoting and hopping about the tables and couches was damn impressive.
I can't really say anything bad about the rest of the movie, it was just so-so, not too memorable, not too impressive. The only thing that did annoy me were some badly shot parts (shots where heads were blocking characters' faces, big butts were the focus, etc.
) that took away from seeing the actual dancing.
