Review of The Gauntlet (1977) by Michael R — 18 Jun 2011
Ben Shockley has been given the job of flying to Las Vegas, picking up a hooker named Gus Malley, and escorting her to Phoenix so she can tesitfy in court. A nothing witness in a nothing trial Shockley is told by the police commisoner....but Vegas odd makers are betting 60:1 Malley won't make it to court alive and an army of Mob hitmen and dirty cops including Shockley's boss well try their hardest to see both Shockley and Malley buried in the desert.
Essentially Clint Eastwood pokeing fun at his Dirty Harry persona, Ben Shockley is played as a washed up has been cop with a drinking problem well still retaining the classic Eastwood persona. Sondra Locke (Malley) would later appear in Sudden Impact with Eastwood where she acted comatose threw the whole thing, here she's a whole lot livelier returning Eastwoods fire and saving his ass a couple times (check out her comparsion between a whore and a cop). Played more for laughs then anything this is one of Eastwoods best films.
