Review of The Gamers: Dorkness Rising (2008) by Brett W — 25 Dec 2009
Though it suffers from inevitable low-budget pitfalls and tends to drag out in certain places 'Gamers' turned out to be an unexpected gem that lovingly pays tribute to all of the little quirks and absurdities that draw people to the sub-culture in the first place...not to mention it's just downright hilarious at times, clearly conjuring the spirit of 'Monty Python' to good use.
This isn't a "mockumentary" type satire (which has been done to death), or even a parody (which usually try way too hard). This film let's the characters be people you would want to meet in real life and instead presents the inherent silliness of the game itself. As the crew goes headfirst into their Dungeon adventure we too are transported with them to the fantasy world where crazy rules are negotiated and (often) broken...but also a place that can be surprisingly touching.
