Review of The Game (1997) by Ryan S — 02 Sep 2010
I was very intrigued by this movie and was interested throughout. Everything was quite vague and kept you guessing as to what was actually going on and what was actually going to happen. Michael Douglas is great in this movie and it's definitely a great role for him.
I was really enjoying this movie throughout most of it, as the twist and turns continued and went on and on and then, the ultimate twist came... the ending. And that is one... the movie turned to shit.
I was behind the original ending, spoiler alert... when he shot his brother who was coming out to meet him and take him into his birthday party and jumped off the roof. That was all really intense and it was a good "WTF" ending, but then, it doesn't end there and he.
.. falls through a glass ceiling and into... his REAL party. Then they are party it up and he has no problem with the fact that these people put him through hell, made him drive his car into the ocean, stranded him in Mexico, made him think he shot his brother and then attempt to kill himself.
After all that, he just laughs it off and enjoys himself. It's just ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. I usually like an outrageous twist ending, when there is actually a pay-off, but there just isn't to this one.
It just makes the whole movie a complete farce and ends in a completely lame and cheesy way. Another thing concerning the ending... I find it funny how they knew EXACTLY where he would jump off the building and EXACTLY how he would fall and EXACTLY where he would land.
So utterly ridiculous and unrealistic and ruined what otherwise could have been a great movie. I'll give it three stars just because, up to the ending, it WAS a good movie.
