Review of The Game (1997) by Al M — 02 Aug 2011
The Game's plot line is not entirely original--it's origins can be traced back to The Most Dangerous Game and other stories. But this early film from David Fincher develops the story in an original, consistently surprising, and stylish fashion.
As he had already done in Seven, Fincher demonstrates how he can take an ordinary genre film and turn it into something truly majestic and original. The Game could have been nothing more than a forgettable thriller, but instead Fincher turns it into a powerful meditation upon the influences of the past, the detrimental effects of bourgeoisie ennui, and the all too human need for danger, desire, and adventure.
