Review of The Game (1997) by Luc L — 16 Oct 2012
Oscar-Winner:Michael Douglas is excellent in one of his best roles as Nicolas Van Orton, a cold-blooded businessman, who never forgot that his father killed himself on his birthday. Which his father commited suicide at 48 years old.
Nicolas just turned 48. When he received an unusual birthday gift from his younger brother (Oscar-Winner:Sean Penn). Which is Consumer Recreation Services (CRS), which it is a game. That his brother promises him, it will change his life.
Nicolas decides to try it, it seems, he got rejected by CRS at first after doing psychogical and physical examinations. Then his game starts at his own home, when he recieves an strange clown doll and then Nicolas goes on a roller-coaster going straight down.
Directed by David Fincher created an moody, dark, atmospheric thriller with some incredible suspense, thrills with some very dark comedy. Which "The Game" isn't for everyone, especially the ending, which seems out of place at first.
After having repeated viewings, the ending makes sense but you wish, it could have been a little stronger. Still "The Game" is one of the best movies that had offer back in 1997. Underrated to be sure, but it went on to have an cult following over the years.
Hard to believe, it was made 15 years ago. The criterion collection is excellent from this year, you can give or throw away your old region 1 DVD, which was an non-anamorphic Widescreen transfer. Get the criterion collection DVD or the Blu-ray of the same name.
