Review of The Game (1997) by Avid C — 16 Feb 2013
Pretty much the Michael Douglas show again, and as usual, it's pretty good. It does go on though and offer little to keep you attached. It has plenty of style and there looks to be substance too but on closer inspection, it's not so smart.
Everything lies on a fairly uninteresting paranoia. Sure, it's brooding and atmospheric but it's been done many times and been done better too (The Machinist for example). There's some memorable scenes but then there's a lot of quite bland build up inbetween.
I simply couldn't stay engaged for as long as it required me to and I'm somewhat glad because the ending left a lot to be desired and would likely have bothered me if I had been fully-immersed throughout the film- the guy basically has the worst friends in the world and also a really cool t-shirt.
I could have done with a better conclusion than that. It's a good study of building suspense and developing atmosphere as well as how to make a movie look good but it's not so entertaining and the good elements don't fully make up for that.
