Review of The Game (1997) by Whit W — 23 Aug 2013
"The Game" is a crazy head-scratcher. I think I liked it, but I'm just not sure what to make of it. For one thing, Michael Douglas absolutely owns the movie. It's pretty exciting and it's just about the only movie other than "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" that I'll watch Sean Penn in. The movie looks great, too.
The problem is the total suspension of disbelief that you must have to engage in this whole affair once the story starts rolling and bad stuff starts happening to Douglas's character. How could something like the game be arranged? Then there's that ending. It's not a satisfying one, and it is so ambiguous. I definitely could have missed something but I don't think it really has an ending.
Watch this for the performance of Douglas. His cool, confident demeanor is shaken down by the game and it's fun to see his elitist character deal with the breakup of his career and later his life.
