Review of The Gallows (2015) by Lovro H — 20 Aug 2015
Seeing many negative reviews for the movie, I had doubts about seeing it, so I stalled. But, I ended up watching it anyways and I have to say, it's not THAT bad. Yes, the found-footage horror genre is overused already, but there still manage to be some good ones (Apocalyptic, for example).
The Gallows falls in the category of the sort-of bad ones. The story is interesting, and the school setting, I really liked. I didn't see a school-centered horror for a very long time. The characters are mediocre.
Very cliche, to be honest. The look of the movie is good. I really liked the black/red visuals later in the movie. The shaky cam was sometimes a bit too much, though. The ending is a disaster. It has a plot-twist that is really stupid and makes the movie not worth watching at all.
There aren't as many jump scares as in some other new horror movies, but they're still here, and they're still annoying when done badly. All in all, a very average found-footage horror movie that has every cliche of the genre and because of that, it's not worth watching.
