Review of The Gallows (2015) by Olivia S — 14 Jul 2015
My college did this competition where a group of 3-5 students would spend 24 hours writing, filming, and editing a short film. The top results were usually impressive for college kids without any kind of film training, but most of them were just shaky short films with bad acting and worse editing. The Gallows felt like one of these bad films, however instead of lasting 5 minutes it lasted 90 minutes.
My favorite part of the movie was when the cheerleader said she had no service, but clearly had wifi (granted not service, but she could still connect to social media and wifi-based texting services), and the guy said that was because she was using her phone all day. I wonder if the actors were actually listening to the crap they were saying, or if they tried pointing out the idiocy of it to the writers and got rebuffed.
I would recommend this movie to 12-year-old boys that want to sneak into a rated R movie and teenage girls who want to pretend that they're scared on a date so they can hide in their boyfriend's arms. If I was their film professor and this was their end-of-year project, I would give them a D+ and say "Good effort for your first film, but effort doesn't give you a passing grade.".
