Review of The Gallows (2015) by Luke D — 09 Aug 2015
Another lame found-footage film to be added to the trash heap that features a refreshing setting with a few good instances of suspense...and nothing else. This film's marketing is a total sham saying it's from Blumhouse productions, when in fact they only handled distribution after the film sat on the shelf for two years which is false advertising and will sucker many people into watching this crap.
Right from the get-go I hated all of the characters, particularly the main camera guy who is the most obnoxious, stereotypical, and straight-up douchiest screen presence I've seen in a while and I was begging the movie to kill him.
The story of this film is complete bullshit with a high school putting on a play where a student died twenty years previous and yet we learn nothing about this play, how it happened, or why they would even try it again; better be a masterpiece play.
Then we get the contrived notion that the school's auditorium doesn't lock properly and everyone knows this, so of course these idiots can get into the school no problem to do whatever they want: as can the rest of the town.
Once the "action" gets underway, it's typical found footage junk with false scares, stuttery images, and for fun they throw in a retarded twist ending that makes no sense at all and was honestly pathetic.
This only skates by getting my worst grade because of the interesting setting opportunities and one or two scenes that built up some tension; the kills suck, the acting sucks, the killer looks like Pyramid Head from Silent Hill, avoid at all costs.
