Review of The Future (2013) by Dickie L — 03 Aug 2011
Anything was bound to be a disappointment after Me and You and Everyone We Know, and so it is with The Future. Miranda July's gentle, perverse wit still peeps through, and there are some lovely moments, but they struggle to form into a satisfying linear narrrative.
July's humour relies on us liking her characters and the problem here is that, as Sophie, her actions alienate her from us. The really wacky elements may alienate some people (ie. cat-as-narrator, and one characters ability to make time stand still), but I didn't mind these at all.
Its where the film should have had a heart at its centre that it fails.
