Review of The Future (2013) by Ollie W — 10 Nov 2011
If you loved July's awesome debut feature 'Me and You and Everyone We Know' - then you will love this, her quirky, hilarious, mad-cap follow up that in many ways refines some of the themes of that first film and yet certainly indulges others.
Admittedly there are similarities between the two first films, July stars and directs again, now an experimental Dancer (Dance-teacher), then a Video Installation Artist (one of her many real-life occupations) both of which allow for moments of self-indulgence, but in my opinion, neither of which is unnecessary for delineating the complex, self-parodying character's she so often writes about.
The talking cat appears to have irked many reviewers and punters, as does the talking moon, but my suggestion is - if you are irritated by surreal excursions, incredibly dead-pan comic timing and introverted relationships then you should probably steer clear of this one.
For myself, who attempts to keep an open mind about these sorts of Indie films - I found it to be a frequently amusing, well-acted, quietly tragic little study of adult fears and commitments.
