Review of The Fury (1978) by Yogesh R — 25 Aug 2007
De Palma's virtuosity and Irving's body are both on display here, and it's hard to say which is more impressive. The screenplay plays like a black comedy in which the outcome is always worse than what you imagined.
Despite several moments of De Palma-ian incoherence, this film really stuck in my memory, in particular John Cassavetes' excellent performance as the bad guy. Remember how Shakespeare said, "One may smile and smile and be a villain?" Cassavetes is the literal embodiment of that quote -- the more he smiles, the scarier he gets.
Laura Innes ("ER") and Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue") have small roles, as does William Finley (star of De Palma's earlier "Sisters" and "Phantom of the Paradise").
