Review of The Furies (1950) by Martin T — 24 Sep 2009
The term Hitchcockian gets thrown around a little too freely, but I think it applies here. Not because the film is suspenseful (though it is, at a few points) but because of the way it handles psychological issues.
Stanwyck is terrific as a woman with a hell of an Electra complex, and the movie hints at incestuous undertones with her father. There's a lot of darkness to the story, although it backs away from that at the end which makes the conclusion a bit unsatisfying.
Still excellent, though.
