Review of The Funhouse (1981) by Toad T — 07 Jul 2013
Directed by Tobe Hooper, the mind behind "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "The Funhouse" establishes itself as a stand-out among the many films of the 80's slasher trend. Sure, teenagers have sex, do drugs, and get killed off in various ways.
But Hooper and screenwriter Larry Block know that atmosphere is everything in a horror film. Carnivals are a widely neglected environment for horror films, and why not place four teenagers in peril while trapped inside a classic carnival funhouse.
The movie is eerie through and through, and the acting is decent. Plus the music is great, and the makeup is outstanding. Elizabeth Berridge's Amy gets a little annoying towards the end, but otherwise, "The Funhouse" manages to be a nifty, fun blend of slashers and monsters.
