Review of The Fugitive (1993) by Wayne K — 02 Apr 2016
Often exciting, often funny, often clever and mostly entertaining, The Fugitive doesn't break much new ground, but doesn't overreach. The whole 'simple crime turning into a larger conspiracy' concept has been done countless times, and here it actually bogs the movie down, detracting from the cat and mouse game that lies at its core.
Jones is a great supporting actor, inhabiting a character both ruthless and charismatic, and Ford keeps us on his side as the man caught on the wrong side of the law. The bursts of action and chase scenes are fun to watch, but it's nothing overly special, and our grieving hero doesn't seem to care much for the loss of his wife, almost dismissing it completely, which seems pretty callous and unrealistic.
He never manages to stay far ahead of Jones, which keeps things taut and our hero constantly on his toes. It's not something I'd rush to see again, but it's a fun, straightforward chase movie that's worth seeing for the 2 lead performances and it's brief bursts of energy.
