Review of The Frozen Ground (2013) by Michael L — 28 Aug 2013
I admit it, I love Nicolas Cage. A truly brilliant actor who can get it right and wrong all at once. He's super in THE FROZEN GROUND as is Vanessa Hodgens. Her performance is gutsy and quite lovely.
The film is being dumped in limited release, VOD, and digital distribution. But THE FROZEN GROUND deserves better. Much better! Not necessarily because the film is brilliant but because THE FROZEN GROUND proves just how difficult it is to make a good film.
All the ingredients are here for a really terrific serial killer film but there are simply too many plot points and the tone keeps changing. Is this an exploitation film, serious work examining the plight of women, a tribute to women who are victims of crime.
Or is THE FROZEN GROUND vacant entertainment? This is a film that could easily be studied to see just how difficult it is to make a good movie. Still good but not what it should be. Nic is pretty super!
