Review of The Frozen Ground (2013) by Ross H — 20 Jan 2014
Not surprised this got mixed reviews and mostly negative, the subject matter is grim and the realistic approach makes it grimmer. Based on a true story, the director has walked a fine line between being true to the reality and making a movie that is entertaining.
Tracking a seriela killer must be soul destroying, frustrating and a slow slog; not qualities that make for a good movie experience. To overcome this the director had to concentrate on dialogue and action rather than the real life process which was mostly forensic and file based. This means some plot events are left unexplained and seem less than credible. But that's the limitation of film, it can't be a book, and within these limits I think this a fine film of it's type (which is rare). Cage is well cast for a change and all the actors give good performances. The location is spectacular and the story itself engrossing for those interested in true crime. It is about murderous depravity, set in the seedy world of cheap prostitution, so many will be repelled. if like me you are not, see it.
