Review of The Frozen Ground (2013) by Brendan N — 12 Aug 2018
The film is adequate which is a slightly disappointing rating, considering the heavy hitters leading the film. The biggest issue is the lack of character focus, the film attempts to be a cliché thriller when it is a dark drama.
The two interesting characters are the ones we spend the least time with. Hansen was a dark and twisted individual and we only have those moments with him, not the moments when he is putting his children to sleep or being the every day man.
These thriller films died for a very good reason, cliché boredom. Why did this film decide to tread safe ground when it could have been a truly terrifying drama. I knew the film would lack depth just by looking at the running time, you cannot have a film with substance running on such a short time, there was a lot of potential here.
Cusack is incredible here and shows the depth he is capable of achieving when he isn't too busy working on Direct to DVD films. Cage showcases what he use to do so well but even he cannot save a film that felt content to go down the road of being a straight forward thriller.
The filmmaker rarely gives us the film we deserved, I honestly feel this could have been one of the great serial killer films, right up there with Zodiac, it had the cast and definitely the performances, sadly not the right filmmaker at the helm.
