Review of The Front Runner (2018) by Ginak — 21 Nov 2018
The biggest holes in this film are that it does not explain enough about the time in which Gary Hart ran for president nor does it tell us how many affairs he had (if any) before the one that ended his presidential run.
That said, Jason Reitman again delivers a beautifully crafted and thought-provoking film made real through wonderful performances (here by Hugh Jackman and Vera Farmiga among many others -- I don’t remember a weak actor in the cast).
Maybe after our current president, the insistence on perfection (in marital fidelity at least) won’t be an issue, but it used to be huge in the USA (unlike in Europe where ministers have mistresses and nobody seems to care).
This film may not make a huge amount of money at the box office, but I hope it becomes a classroom staple at universities since it is both an engrossing film and a great way to start a debate on political and other types of morality, including journalistic ethics.
