It's certainly no Lord of the Rings but Peter Jackson's The Frighteners is a great little film. Michael J. Fox is Frank Bannister - after a car accident that killed his wife he developed psychic abilities allowing him to see and speak with ghosts.

He befriends two ghosts and they work with him to haunt houses where Frank pretends to exorcise them. His cons are working well but suddenly the death toll of the town begins to rise and it becomes apparent that an unknown ghostly force is on a killing spree.

Frank and his ghostly friends are the only ones who can help. It's a great horror/comedy; Michael J. Fox manages to cast aside his "Marty" image with ease and plays the ghost hunting conman perfectly.

The plot is really well thought out and is very original. I never really understood why this film wasn't better received and considering its age the CGI is pretty damn good and withstands the test of time well.

It's a great comedy that deserves far more appreciation. Whether you've seen this film before or not - definitely give this a whirl.
