Review of The Frighteners (1996) by Poul F — 22 Nov 2012
The Frighteners (1997) -- [6.0] -- Michael J. Fox headlines this pre-"Lord of the Rings" horror comedy from Peter Jackson. The narrative gets a bit muddled, involving many characters and flashbacks, but there are enough elements here that you're likely to find at least some of them interesting.
Fox does a commendable job anchoring the film amidst a steady stream of visual effects and a large supporting cast. I liked John Astin (Gomez in the original 'Addams Family') as a ghostly wild west character called The Judge, and Dee Wallace gets to cut loose as a troubled woman with a spooky past.
Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) just about steals the show as a super-strange FBI agent who's spent way too much time living among religious cults.
