Review of The Frighteners (1996) by Sam T — 29 Jan 2013
One of the early, over-the-top, humorous horror movies from Peter Jackson. The problem with this story about a man who sees ghosts and tries to stop a rather malicious one is that the range of jokes used is surprisingly thin.
Yes, ghosts can go through things and due to the ever changing rules of being a ghost, sometimes their ectoplasmic forms bend and break in goofy ways. After seeing this happen over a dozen times, I was surprised to see a pretty big change in tone.
The jokes do not become more mature, but the story becomes quite dark once a character goes through a pretty inexplicable personality change. Points for the wacky special effects which are good, and a good beginning.
