Scary, funny, touching, exciting, warped, full of twists, and splendidly original, this fantasy-horror-comedy thrills you and chills you in all the right ways, and gives you early evidence of Peter Jackson's brilliance.
While the film's slight shift in tone halfway through might be off-putting to some, in this case, it really seems to make perfect sense.
