Review of The Frighteners (1996) by Jason J — 22 May 2009
The Frighteners is one of those horror comedies that you enjoy because of the outrageous plot and slick direction. You immediately notice that the CG hasn't aged that well, but the humor of the movie forgives that aspect.
You can still see some Marty McFly in Michael J Fox's performance, which made the movie for me a little more enjoyable. I wouldn't call the movie scary simply because it seems to be focused on being a comedic thriller.
Much like Shaun of the Dead, the third act of the movie ditches the comedy for bloody gore (although by today's standards, The Frighteners is pretty tame). All in all, if you want to see an entertaining movie directed by Peter Jackson before his Lord of the Rings days, see this one.
