Review of The French Connection (1971) by Paddy P — 08 Aug 2008
An undoubtedly great film and worthy of all the plaudits it has been given. Directed with verve and energy by Friedkin, and showcasing a magnificent turn from Hackman, this film is a supreme thriller and a superb character portrait.
The showpiece chase sequence is terrific and the ending is fantastic, both demonstrating Friedkin's extraordinary direction. There are also great performances from Roy Scheider and Fernando Rey, but this is Hackman's film providing tension and intensity and creating an iconic screen character.
