Review of The French Connection (1971) by Mattie C — 14 Feb 2009
It was hard to get into at first because the exposition is shaky and you need to pay close attention, but once it gets going it doesn't let up. Loved the unflattering and unromantic portrayal of the police; in this and many other regards the film is like a prologue to The Wire.
Gene Hackman is the definition of relentless. However, it is not a perfect movie by any means and the weakest part was the abrupt ending. This and Dirty Harry were the progenitors of modern cop vs. criminal movies, and many ways neither has been surpassed.
