Review of The French Connection (1971) by Ol R — 25 Jul 2011
Incredibly gritty and uncompromisingly bleak, it's a film that works on every level - a cops and robbers film, an action blockbuster and a unusually grim and chilling meditation on reality. All of the writing would have been for nothing however, if it weren't for the stunning performances from the leads (esp.
Hackman and Scheider) and the way-ahead of it's time camera-work and direction from William Friedkin. Also has one of the best endings in all of cinema.
