Review of The French Connection (1971) by Christopher B — 11 Oct 2013
I enjoyed this movie. It was fast-paced, and had some great action sequences. What I don't understand is why it won the awards it did. Best Picture? Really? I think not. I can only assume that this was seen as somewhat ground breaking when it was released and rode that wave to Oscar glory.
I suppose Hackman was pretty good here, but I've never really liked him much, so that didn't make or break the movie.
I was bothered by some pretty major issues, like how they got the car back together, and in perfect condition, in time for Mr. Frenchy to pick it up.
I also didn't know until it was over that this was based on a true story. I'm kind of glad I didn't know that ahead of time, or it would have started me out on a negative note. I'm sure a bit of it was "fudged" up to make for a more exciting film.
Another movie I can cross off the Top 100 list I've been chipping at. Lots more to go.
