Review of The Fountain (2006) by Kyle J — 06 May 2011
Visionary. Daren Aronofsky is a very interesting director, and I'm glad we have him. All of his films are intense, unorthodox and visually quite beautiful. The Fountain is no exception there. I'd be lying if I said I completely understood the plot. The 3 story lines seem to relate to one another, and not. But the central themes of mortality, love and loss are present throughout and ring heart wrenchingly true.
This project was, of course, originally planned as a bigger budget event with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett taking the lead roles and I have to say I can't think of anyone nailing it any better than Hugh and Rachel. Honestly, I'm not normally a fan of either but this has been treated with real love and the artistry shines through. Jackman in particular just crackles with intensity.
The real showstopper here though, are the visuals. The Fountain may be one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Especially upon finding out that none of this was CGI. I am floored at the level this thing maintains especially given the aforementioned budget drop.
It's real, visceral and effective filmmaking. It would be a shame to miss it.
