The Fountain was an interesting set of very unfocused ideas that really don't come together. The main problem I had is with the span of time we're supposed to accept that this story spans. There was never a point where I really bought that modern day scientist Hugh Jackman became new-age Buddhist bubble-flying astronaut Hugh Jackman. The whole sci-fi aspect felt like it was supposed to be in a different movie. I'll give it points for the striking visuals, but that's it.

The other problem is that, despite the time jumping and imaginative aesthetic, it all revolves around another "I won't let my loved one die" plot that we've all seen before. You can throw as many tree spaceships as you want at the audience, but it doesn't change the fact that we know where this is going, as well as the lesson Thomas will eventually learn.
