Review of The Fountain (2006) by Ryland D — 28 Aug 2012
It's the weakest out of any Darren Aronofsky film. But there are areas to applaud as well as to criticize. It takes someone very unique to come up with an idea like this, AND put it into production after one failed attempt.
The visuals are amazing, although I felt they should be spread across an IMAX screen rather than on an at-home TV. My biggest complaint was the story. I've watched complex storylines, with interweaving characters that somehow find a way to compliment each others lives for good or for worse, but I had to read the back of the DVD cover after this to make sure I understood what was going on.
Altogether I think was an attempt to be too clever and too different. It doesn't quite work out, although the acting is fine, and the concept is a good one. I was impressed by the majority of the visuals, which really gave it a Tarsem Singh kind of false reality.
But this one for me didn't hit the Aronofsky level.
