Review of The Fountain (2006) by Robert D — 02 Sep 2012
Though the movie might not be the hero's journey most would expect, on a purely aesthetic level, it's gorgeous. The script shies away from being too pedantic, but also carries itself into some awkward resolutions, though the performances make that much easier to take.
Clint Mansell's soundtrack (featuring the Kronos Quartet in some of their best contemporary work) is haunting even as the film loses its way and the CG starscapes show their age, but the experience is most complete at the moments in-between; when the beautiful sets, nearly perfect lighting, and the themes from the soundtrack brings things to a more successful tipping point that the story never quite reaches on its own.
