Review of The Fountain (2006) by Avery C — 20 Sep 2014
Spoiler: For those who cannot figure it out, the man in the bubble with the tree is the same scientist looking for a cure for death for his wife. The conquistador story is his wife's novel, which he finished by her request.
Hugh Jackman's character buries his wife, and plants a tree on her grave in the countryside. He walks away vowing he will cure death... we are led to believe that he did so, as he travels through space with the tree that was planted on his wife's grave, now many, many years later.
The species of the tree was the secret to finding a cure, which is why he occasionally eats of the bark - it gives him immortality. He is taking the tree through space to the nebula once thought by the Mayans to be the afterlife or whatever, which is mentioned in his wife's story and was related to him once when they were stargazing.
His hope is to make his wife, embodied by the tree, immortal by spreading her "stardust" across the universe, and he is there to join her. SUMMARY - Scientist loses wife, wife made him promise to finish novel with themes of immortality and space nebula, scientist vows finding cure for death, finds it, plucks tree planted on wife's grave and puts into space traveling bubble, together they are off to be immolated into stardust.
