Review of The Fountain (2006) by Jake Z — 18 Oct 2015
Awkwardly-written and clumsily-plotted, The Fountain is an overwrought pretentious mess, teeming with CGI-laden gimmickry and cardboard characterizations. With a story spanning three centuries, it's no surprise that Aronofsky fails to fully flesh out his characters, instead getting lost in a labyrinth of absurd imagery.
Beyond its faulty mechanics, the crux of the film's failure is that it passes off sentiment for substance and in so doing becomes stifled in its own ambitions, which draws more parallels to Nolan's Insterstellar than one might initially think.
Hugh Jackman, left to pick up the pieces, chews more scenery than the VFX department.
