Review of The Fountain (2006) by Andy S — 28 Sep 2012
Life, death, loss and suffering, all of which I love to see played out on the big screen (or the small HD screen in most cases), but come on just give me a good story. And there might have been a good story here but again it was lost with another case of these young(er) directors over thinking and over editing.
Why does everything have to be told in non-linear fashion nowadays? Is it because todays audience (young(er)) have grown up on this shaky cam, split second MTV style jump cut form of story telling? Can they not sit still for 90-120 minutes in a theater or in their home and watch a good story being told? Like I said there might have been a good story here but the style is too complicated and ultimately frustrating to watch that we simply give up or don't care any more about the characters.
Is the wife the tree? Is yoga man the scientist? Why does Spanish guy turn into a bunch of plants? etc, etc, etc! Wonder why Brad Pitt bailed on the project and the original budget was trimmed from $70M to $35M? For the answer to these and other unimportant questions.
..try to watch the movie.
