Review of The Fountain (1988) by Liz — 25 Jun 2011

The Fountain is a Darren Aronofsky film, and if you are unaware of who Aronofsky is well I'll tell you. Darren Aronofsky is a director who started out with his cult-classic Pi, and carried on with more successes such as, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and his upcoming Black Swan. His distinctive style has marked him as one of the best popularly unknown directors of our time. And The Fountain may be one of his least known films.

Three time periods, the 1500's, the 2000's, and sometime in the afterlife, are portrayed and in each time period Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are characters searching for immortality. As the story progresses the differences in the time periods, and characters become more and more pronounced until it is clear what part of the whole character the singular segment is. And if that didn't make sense, don't worry it won't until you see it, and even then it might not.

Hugh Jackman is remarkable, and exhibits more talent than his most popular character, Wolverine, ever could. If you remember Jackman for one role, let it be this one.

The sets, and special effects are magical. There is no way to describe the awe you have while watching the stars, and the different time periods, especially the future. Every different effect blows you away, into a realm of imagination. Pure imagination. Darren Aronofsky takes your breath away. The angles he uses, and the cuts are spectacular. To describe them would take pages.

In conclusion, it is important for all of us to see, not only The Fountain, but all of Aronofsky's works because he takes your breath away, and makes you think. After any of his movies you will analyze your life, death, relationships you have with others, and your soul.
