Review of The Founder (2016) by Drew M — 23 Jan 2017
3 Stars. This was a disappointment for me. It's such an easy concept to sell and create, like it's restaurants, but somehow they screwed even this one up. The films tone is wholesome and that's its biggest mistake.
Especially for a film about the evil of greed, capitalism and the costs and the lengths people will go through to obtain the American dream. The ideals of the characters and the place were already wholesome enough for the era.
It made everything feel toothless and no fun to watch Keatons character make something of himself by stomping on and stealing somebody else's dream (the American way). There's a couple good scenes but never a great one.
Offerman and Keaton give good performances that teetered on caricatures but had a tad bit more nuance in their performances than the director they had gave them to work with, I felt. This could have and should have been so much better.
I'm seriously surprised with the films high rating.
