Review of The Forest (2016) by Jamie J — 29 Jun 2016
The Forest is an interesting concept, the thought of basing a film on an the apparent Japanese suicide forest is a pretty neat one. Sadly the film relies too much on tried and tested (and lame) jump scares to provide any real depth or thick, unsettling atmosphere.
Natalie Dormer works well enough here, and roles like this come around just at the right time, when she has suddenly become 'less busy'. But to be frank, she isn't really given much to work with, and neither are any of the cast really. The cinematography though is gorgeous, and really shows the contrast between Japan's neon excess and the murky countryside. Only to be marred by stodgy cgi.
You also get a feeling you have seen all this many times before.
All right I suppose.
