Review of The Foreigner (2017) by George R — 13 Oct 2017
I'm a big Chan Fan, watched almost all of his movies. Most folks from the west aren't familiar with his more serious roles in China or how brutal some of his early movies were, so it was refreshing to see him portraying a man who lost everything.
The movie itself has good pacing, pulse pounding soundtrack that harkens to 80's action films, decent action (not enough), and well-played performances. BUT the movie lacks in main character time.
It starts off well by helping the audience get emotionally invested into Jackie's character but the second half devotes most time to unraveling conspiracy. Brosnan ends up carrying this movie leaving Jackie to feel more like a spectre or vengeful spirit almost.
The movie satisfies but just barely. I would have been happier with more rage, more action, and definitely more Jackie.
