Review of The Foreigner (2017) by Brandon W — 14 Oct 2017
The Foreigner is directed by Martin Campbell, and it stars Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosman in a political action thriller about a retired Vietnam War specialist who is just having a regular life with his daughter, until a bomb happened that killed the only family that he has, and he goes up to a government official to ask for the names of the bombers because it was caused by an IRA group where Liam (Pierce Brosman) was involved at one point, but doesn?t know the names of the bombers, which causes Quan (Jackie Chan) to mess around Liam until he gives the names.
I was looking forward to see because I haven?t seen Jackie Chan in a long time, and that it?s directed by Martin Campbell, the director who revived James Bond twice, first with Goldeneye, and second with Casino Royale.
So my mom and I went to go see this, and we basically have the same thought in that we really enjoyed this a lot. This is probably one of the best performances that I?ve seen of Jackie Chan because of the dramatic performance that he gave that really did represent family loss as he has no one else left, and you can see the pain and sadness in his eyes that I was almost starting to tear up, and that never happens to me that early into the film.
Pierce Brosman is also great in this that I haven?t heard his Irish accent before, which I thought was a good accent, since it is the accent that he was born with. The action scenes are entertaining to watch, and it always fun to see Jackie Chan kicks some butt, while leaving him to be vulnerable as he is getting old and not as flexible as he used to be.
The movie mostly focuses on the political aspect than the action scenes that the trailers were advertising, and while some people are going to be disappointed with the movie?s lack of action scenes, I was fine with what they did, and I was interested in where it was going thanks to the script by David Marconi.
The issues that I have with the film are that I had a feeling about what the twist is, and that the movie itself is really nothing new which you have seen in constant action films. The Foreigner is a very fun film that it?s really nice to see Jackie Chan back in action, and I hope to see more of him in future films.
