Review of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) by Jared B — 08 Jul 2010
Just as most critics would state there was too much of a very specific and cultural story arc surrounding what everyone wanted, Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie. The problem is not that the story was too boring or not interesting, but not enough people outside of Chinese culture have a vested interest in it.
The story takes the back seat for the interactions and the fight scenes, where the movie really shines. Especially in the acting where Jet Li actually takes a less serious role as the monkey king, and does a good job taking the viewer away from any pre-conceived ideas about the roles Li undertakes.
The Jackie Chan role, not to seem miscast or forgotten, is very fun and shines with just the right twinkle that Chan is well known for. Not to mention how well they emphasize the interactions with him and Li, without overdoing it.
Without being overshadowed the story seems to have just the right amount of humor and fantasy to keep the audiences interested, but sometimes it falls short and seems to just be something to fill the gaps between the fighting. Taking too much liberties of the old fashioned Kung Fu genere method. At times you want to know more, but ultimately it helps to know the Chinese story "journey to the west" to get the whole idea of what is going on.
Though not perfect or AAA, they produced a very good piece of fan service with just the right amount of fun and intrigue. People interested in Chinese culture, Chan, Li, or just want a nice new age Kung Fu movie would enjoy this if not just for the fact that Chan and Li go at it.
