Review of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) by Ilsa W — 19 Apr 2014
It's not as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, it actually can be quite entertaining, but it fails to be more than a cliché martial arts film. If there's anything good about that, it's that the film is at least faithful to its target audience - people who are fans of martial arts films.
In this respect, it's actually a watchable martial arts film, but the big problem is that the main protagonist is some loser from America who's obsessed with kung fu movies. Wouldn't it have been great if the film actually was set in Ancient China, and the protagonist was a martial arts warrior? To be fair, the plot isn't bad, but it tends to get distracted by contrived filler, mainly involving the main character.
The action is actually pretty good, even with the special effects, but sometimes it can seem cheesy, especially towards the end.
