Review of The Food of the Gods (1976) by Dr. J — 25 Oct 2010
Saw this at the drive-in with my dad when I was about ten or eleven years old in the mid-70s. It scared the crap out of me then and watching it again last night I enjoyed it a lot and could see why it scared my younger self.
Some effective special effects and some not so. Silly decisions made by the wild-eyed hero -- his brother was right about not going out in the open-topped Jeep -- but our hero doesn't seem terribly bothered by his brother being eaten alive by giant rats. Two great actors, Ida Lupino and Ralph Meeker, are not utilized by their cardboard characters but it's still fun to see them in this cheesy violence-against-rats rampage. For old time's sake...
