Review of The Fog (2005) by Nigel M — 31 Aug 2008
The Fog was never Carpenter's greatest film, but his ability to create an eerie sense of dread, along with an experience cast including Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Hal Holbrook helped make it one of the more memorable films of my childhood.
A remake was always going to be a travesty. Welling and Grace are bland and wooden. The older cast members are given little screen time, as the 12 year olds this is aimed at don't want to see old people in movies.
Carpenter's creepy Tubular Bells-esque score is replaced with by-the-numbers EMO crap. Expanding the historical back story is disrupting, and leads to a twist at the end that is frankly ludicrous, though this is in keeping with the general tone of the movie.
One character stationed at a high-tech weather station sets out to explore the fog using an oil lamp?!?! And Selma Blair is no Adreinne Barbeau.
