#flowersofwar got middling to hostile reviews and I'm not sure why. The director, Zhang Yimou, at his best is extraordinary: "Raise the Red Lantern," "Hero," and "House of Flying Daggers.
" His newest film about the Rape of Nanking during World War II is not his best, so that makes it merely very, very good. And no one photographs a beautiful woman's face better or more hauntingly.
