Review of The Flowers of War (2011) by Marc G — 21 Jul 2012
I have seen a large number of Chinese historical dramas and this is not one of my favorites. The cinematography in the movie is excellent but the story line itself leave much to be desired. They could have done a better job at developing some of the characters.
Other than the lead prostitute, many of the other prostitutes seemed to remain nameless. Bales performance could have been better and more believable. It is another story of the American hero that was the only one that was able to 'save' the Chinese during a crisis.
I would have liked to see what happened to the women at the end because the story left us hanging - in an anti-climatic annoying way. Perhaps the movie doesn't do the book much justice, but overall it was just okay for me.
